Programs
Program Description:
This 4-part series is designed to move young adults from "surviving" to "thriving" in the kitchen. We provide the technical skills to cook with confidence and the nutritional intelligence to fuel a busy life—all while supporting the local food system.
Class 1: Fueling the Focus
Before picking up a knife, we master the "why." This session teaches students how to decode nutrition labels and understand the "Plate Method" to guide portion sizes and healthy choices. We’ll focus on blood sugar balance to avoid the dreaded afternoon energy crash, ensuring students have the steady fuel needed for long study sessions and high-performance days.
Class 2: The One-Pan Masterclass
Students learn the most essential technical skills: knife safety, heat control, and "mise en place." We will prepare our signature Moroccan Chicken (or Tofu), teaching participants how to use bold, heart-healthy spices to make budget-friendly ingredients taste like a five-star meal.
Class 3: Dining Hall & Grocery Intelligence
Navigating a campus dining hall or a grocery store on a budget can be overwhelming. This session provides a blueprint for success. We’ll cover how to "hack" the salad bar for maximum nutrition, identify hidden sugars in food, and build a "Fresh 5" shopping list of versatile produce that lasts all week.
Class 4: The Assembly Line: Grain Bowls & Greens
In our final kitchen session, students learn "assembly-style" cooking—the secret to eating well on a tight schedule. We will prepare Mexican Pulled Chicken/Veggie Bowls and a 5-Minute Power Salad. This session emphasizes meal-prepping one base component to create three different meals, ensuring no food (or money) goes to waste.
When:
• Tuesdays | June 16, June 30, July 7, July 21
• 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Where:
• Philip Heit Center (150 W. Main St, New Albany, OH)
• Demo Kitchen on the first floor
Fee:
• $240 /person for all 4 classes
• $120 for classes 1 & 2 or 3 & 4
About the Instructor:
Christina Allen founded Food Leads in 2021 from a deeply personal place. She grew up watching people she loved—especially her dad—struggle with Type 2 diabetes. When she learned just how disproportionately this disease impacts Black families, the statistics stopped feeling like numbers and started feeling like neighbors, aunties, uncles, and friends.
Food Leads was created for community—rooted in culture, family, and the belief that everyone deserves simple, joyful access to healthier food. It exists to make managing diabetes a little less overwhelming and to make wellness feel possible for Columbus families.
